Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO)

Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) is a pure natural oil that is originally from coconut meat (copra). The process of making Virgin Coconut Oil uses a method that does not involve chemical ingredients or chemical processes and also does not go through a heating process.

Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) produces a product with a low water content and free fatty acid content, is clear in color, smells good, and has a long shelf life of more than 12 months.

Studies on Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) had carried out by researchers in Europe and America since the early 1990s.

For example, in the book Miracle Massage for Babies & Toddlers it is explained that Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) is oil from coconut meat which is processed by a natural separation process without heating.

Key Points about Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO)

Virgin coconut oil is typically extracted through methods like cold-pressing or centrifugation, which involve minimal heat and processing. This helps to retain the natural flavor, aroma, and nutritional properties of the coconut oil.

Virgin coconut oil contains a combination of saturated and unsaturated fats. It is rich in medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs), which are considered to be more easily metabolized by the body compared to long-chain triglycerides found in other types of fats. MCTs are often associated with various health benefits.

While research is ongoing, some studies suggest that the consumption of virgin coconut oil in moderation may have potential health benefits, such as improving lipid profiles, supporting weight management, and providing a quick source of energy. Additionally, the antioxidants present in virgin coconut oil may contribute to its potential health-promoting properties.

Virgin coconut oil has a distinct coconut flavor and aroma, making it a popular choice for cooking, baking, and flavoring dishes. It is used in a variety of cuisines around the world and can be used for frying, sautéing, or as a replacement for butter or other oils in recipes.

Apart from its culinary uses, virgin coconut oil is also used in skincare and hair care products due to its moisturizing and nourishing properties. It is often used as a natural moisturizer, hair conditioner, and even as a base oil in aromatherapy and massage.

Despite its potential benefits, virgin coconut oil is high in saturated fat, so it’s important to use it in moderation as part of a balanced diet. As with any dietary change, it’s recommended to consult with a healthcare professional before making significant changes to your diet.

Refine Coconut Oil (RBD)

RBD Coconut Oil or Refine Coconut Oil is raw coconut oil that has been purified, bleached and deodorized. Refined coconut oil (RBD) comes from dried coconut meat that is steam refined (no chemicals are used in the process).

Refine Coconut Oil (RBD) has different characteristics due to the high pressure distillation process so that the resulting coconut oil becomes clearer, has a bland taste and has no odor.

Refine Coconut Oil (RBD) is often used in commercial food production, such as in the production of snacks, baked goods, and packaged foods. It’s also commonly used in cosmetics, skincare products

Steps in the Process of Making Refine Coconut Oil (RBD)

The oil is first subjected to a refining process to remove any impurities, such as dust, debris, and any remaining moisture. This refining step helps improve the oil’s quality and stability.

After refining, the oil might undergo a bleaching process to remove any remaining color pigments, as well as to further eliminate impurities and undesirable flavors. This step helps create a more consistent and clear appearance in the final product.

The deodorization process involves heating the oil under a vacuum to remove any remaining aromas or flavors that may have developed during previous processing steps. This step is crucial in creating a coconut oil with a neutral flavor profile, which is desirable for certain culinary applications.

Crude Coconut Oil - CNO

Crude Coconut Oil, also known as “Crude Coconut Kernel Oil,” is the oil that is extracted from the coconut meat without undergoing significant refining or processing. Crude Coconut Oil is less processed and retains more of the natural characteristics of the coconut.

The extraction of crude coconut oil typically involves mechanical or natural methods, such as cold-pressing or expeller-pressing. These methods involve pressing the coconut meat to release the oil, often without the use of high heat or chemicals.

As a result, the oil retains more of its natural flavor, aroma, and potential nutrients compared to more extensively processed oils. It might be used in cooking, especially in dishes where the coconut flavor is desired. It can also be used in natural skincare products, hair treatments, and other applications where the inherent qualities of coconut oil are valued.

General Steps of Processing Crude Coconut Oil - CNO

(Traditional Method)

Coconuts are harvested from coconut palms, and the outer husk is removed to reveal the coconut shell.

The hard shell is cracked open to access the coconut meat inside. The coconut meat is then removed from the shell.

The coconut meat is typically grated or shredded to break it down into smaller pieces, making it easier to extract the oil.

There are a few methods for extracting the oil from the grated coconut meat:

  • Cold Pressing: The grated coconut meat is placed in a cloth or sack and pressed manually or mechanically to extract the oil. This method retains more of the natural nutrients and flavor of the coconut oil.

  • Expeller Pressing: Expeller presses use mechanical pressure to extract oil from the coconut meat. This method can involve some heat due to the friction generated during the pressing process.

The extracted oil contains some water and other impurities. The mixture is allowed to settle in a container, allowing the oil to rise to the top while the solids and water settle at the bottom.

After settling, the clear oil is carefully separated from the water and sediment at the bottom. This can be done using ladles or by pouring the oil into a separate container.

To remove any remaining solids or impurities, the extracted oil is typically passed through a filtration process. This helps clarify the oil and improve its quality.

The filtered crude coconut oil is stored in clean, airtight containers. It’s important to protect the oil from light and heat to prevent degradation.
