East Luwu Pepper cultivation of Malonan 1, local pepper plant variety, in South Sulawesi Indonesia began in the 1930s, more precisely in the east coast of Lake Towuti by the Luwu Raya society.
Since then, East Luwu Pepper has grown extensively and has been traded internationally – hence the Gl protection is given to the name of the geographical origin.
East Luwu regency recorded a total production of 4,324 Tons in a year with total of 5,872 Ha of pepper cultivated area.
From the 11 Sub-Dstricts in East Luwu Regency, Towuti has the most extensive pepper cultivated are with 3,968 Ha in which produces an estimate of 3,223 Tons per year.

Known as King of Spice, East Luwu Pepper or Lada Luwu Timur is one of Indonesia specialty spices, sharp and spicy.
Indonesia’s East Luwu Pepper has a specific spicy flavour: 2.56% – 3.48% piperine content in white pepper.
A sharp aroma of East Luwu Pepper is due its essential oils contained in white pepper 1% – 1.92%.
Black pepper contains piperine, a compound which has been shown to increase the bioavailabilityof curcumin – a key anti-inflammatory compound found in turmeric.
